A customs rejection can cost a food exporter more than 20,000 EUR in lost product, freight and customer penalties. What does Regulation EC 178/2002 require from your business?

Backwards, the system must record plot or supplier, treatments, harvest date and factory intake, assigning a unique batch number straight from the weighbridge. Forwards, it must follow that batch through processing, packing and dispatch until you know exactly which customer received which boxes. A full batch query has to resolve in seconds, with GS1-128 labelling on every pallet so the warehouse and the customer read the same information.

Beyond batches, a good system manages seasons: opening and closing, yields per plot, grower settlements and year-on-year comparisons. It must also integrate with what you already run, from the weighbridge to your ERP or invoicing, an integration that typically costs 1,500 to 4,000 EUR. For export, it should generate packing lists and per-country certificates automatically and warn you when a GlobalGAP or organic certificate is about to expire.
